At what age should children start school?

Children all grow at different rates. So if your child’s birthday falls in a grey area for school enrolment, such as in the beginning of the year, it can be difficult to know when it is best for them to begin formal schooling.

Care for Kids outlines the many factors which can help you to decide whether your child is school ready. For example, they explain that readiness isn’t determined by how much they know, but their level of maturity.

A child is ready if they are mature enough to be comfortable with other children, completing tasks and following instructions. Current enrolment trends show children are beginning school later, with more six-year-olds in prep. However, studies show that holding a mature 4 year-old back an extra year does not impact their performance in school. If they are mature enough, they are ready to learn at the same level as the other students, regardless of whether they are 4 or 6.

There are clear signs you should look out for and question before deciding whether your child is ready for enrolment. See the list on Care for Kids.
