Taking Turns; a struggle until age five

Care for Kids shares some fascinating information regarding early childhood development, and at what age we learn how to share:

We often encourage and expect children to share and take turns in interactions with adults and other children. Yet a recent study suggests young children may not comprehend the value of sharing until they are five years old.

Parents, educators and carers of youngsters are likely familiar with the struggle of children fighting over a toy. According to new research, it may be ineffective attempting to explain the importance of sharing before they are old enough.

Dr Melis’ study shows that young children understand the concept of reciprocal interactions. However, they do not yet illustrate the complex planning and reasoning skills necessary to understand turn taking.
