Supporting Men in Their Caring Role

Many different people become carers; for their parents, grandparents, or other loved ones. But as everyone’s situation is different, it can be difficult to provide the best support for everyone in this demanding and sometimes emotional position.

A trial by Alzheimer’s Queensland could mean more support for male carers. A men-only support group was formed when it was observed that men would often stop attending the meetings after only a couple of months.

Theresa Buys of Alzheimer’s Queensland thinks “it was because men had different needs, faced different challenges in their caring roles and/or they may have been embarrassed to talk about certain issues at a female predominant group.”

Many may assume that mostly women take on roles such as caring or nursing, but men in these roles shouldn’t be discounted, and could benefit from individualised support. What do you think about men-only support groups? Read the full article here.
