Let the prisoners be

Well today’s piece is remotely related to children!

Yesterday there were riots at a Melbourne prison because of a ban on smoking from today.

We all know smoking is bad for your health, no need to go there, and I’d never condone it.

However it is a legal substance.

If I were in prison then I think smoking myself to death mightn’t be a bad option. It would seem like a small pleasure in a pretty horrid existence.

You can already tell I am a former smoker. Alas, I am from the generation when it was sort of OK and a bit rebellious too, although if I am being honest it was well known then that is was cancer causing.

Then I guess we grew up a bit, the kids came along and we thought we should be responsible and live long enough to see them grow up.

Their generation was another thing. They were completely not tempted by it in any way. How wonderful what education can do, although it truly did take a generation.

I think many of my generation look around at the terrible scourge of drugs ruining lives today and say well tobacco never did that.

Tobacco doesn’t kill and maim on the roads as alcohol does.

Passive smoke is a worry and smoking near children is unforgiveable.

But if I had to make a choice between ice and tobacco, I know which one I would pick. Granted, neither is a happy or healthy choice to make.

So politicians everywhere, please make tobacco illegal if you really don’t want people to smoke. Otherwise, let the prisoners be.
