Hal Hunter

Hal Hunter – where does one start in this sad and sorry story.

Our family is as sports mad as any Aussie family – sorry, re phrase that, we’re definitely madder.

And I and my girls are Essendon supporters, as opposed to my partner and our son who are Carlton.

But Hal Hunter’s story is not about fun and footie. It’s not about friendly rivalry. It’s not about white line fever. It’s far more serious for Hal and his family.

What struck me most in yesterday’s press was Hal’s phrase ‘there was something done to me that shouldn’t have been done’. That sentence made me think immediately of rape.

It’s a type of assault which the Essendon Football Club seems to deny.

One man’s life is actually in the balance, the future unknown, an unending prospect of anxiety and depression; but not just one man’s life…

How can one establishment get it so wrong?

Although I am Essendon through and through I cannot support an organisation which appears to have no duty of care as an employer.

I feel for Hal’s parents and I feel for his partner.

And at the end of the day, when we’re tired and trying to get overtired children to bed, let’s keep in mind that Hal Hunter’s parents would wish for those times and those simple problems in place of the horrendous platter in front of them right now.
