Challenging Behaviours in Children 8 years plus

Rogan nannies had a fantastic session on Saturday with Heather Barnes of Community Child Care Association entitled Challenging Behaviours in Children 8 years plus

Here’s a snapshot of a discussion I particularly enjoyed:

When we’re dealing with the behaviour of children we need to look at not just what the behaviour was, but more importantly what triggered it.

It’s interesting how approaching this in regulated environments has changed over time. The discipline policy became the behaviour management policy which became the behaviour guidance policy which morphed into the final name of interaction with children policy.

What a positive change.

And that’s what today’s session was all about – presenting everything in a positive perspective.

Our own style of behaviour is extremely important as we guide children to understand and control their own behaviour. Being authoritarian may achieve results in the short term, but not in the long term.

We can’t afford to be passive either.

There is a middle ground and we need to aim always for that. Effective, assertive guidance is the way forward. We need to make a conscious and planned effort to be consistent and less reactive to a child’s behaviour.

There is a balance between appropriate leadership and assertion on the part of parents and carers, without sacrificing the rights and responsibilities of the child.
